We love to ride motorcycles
We hate mandatory motorcycle helmet laws
and what they represent
In my opinion, it doesn't matter whether you ride a Harley Davidson or a
Honda. There's things about motorcycling that people who have never been on
one will never get. For example, most of the people I've met in my life who
would love to force me to wear a helmet have never even been on a bike and
know absolutely nothing about riding a motorcycle. What gall!!
Now don't get me wrong. I am not anti helmet. I
just believe that safety equipment choices ought to be made by the person
who's the expert, not by paternally arrogant Government Safetycrats.
Personally, I think my helmet is a lot more likely to put me in a wheelchair
for the rest of my life than it is likely to do me any actual good, but if you
feel safer riding with a helmet on, don't let me take the fun out of it for
you. I have yet to see the credible study or evidence that having a helmet
on during a crash saves lives or that helmetless Bikers are a so-called
"public burden". Anyone who truly understands the helmet law debate knows
that Government and Medical people don't want helmets on our heads. They
want our ass on a bus.
But more than that, forcing the other guy to do something that he doesn't
think is right is totally inconsistent with life in a free Country. In my
opinion, these helmet law people need to take an American history lesson.
Over the centuries, a lot of good men and women gave their lives so that we
could be free. I tend to doubt that being free to be forced by Government
to wear a motorcycle helmet was what they had in mind. Unfortunately, there
are even
people in high places
within ABATE of Oregon, BikePAC of Oregon and
even the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) that just don't get this pretty
simple concept. 'Nuff said.

We love to ride fast motorcycles
I'm not a huge
Harley Davidson fan, although their quality has certainly improved since the
introduction of the evolution motor in 1985. I prefer fast, loud, custom
built motorcycles
and the S&S evolution. Here is my "every day" bike, a 93 Cubic Inch S&S
stroker with a fairly radical cam and a big Mikuni carb. There's close to
100 HP going to the rear wheel. The Supertrapps
were replaced by drag pipes after this picture was taken. Loud pipes save
lives. My still being alive after 40+ years of being on the same roads as
cagers who "never saw the Motorcyclist" they just killed is evidence of that.
The State Legislative Director for ABATE of Oregon recently
published an editorial piece in the ABATE newsletter saying that Bikers
running loud pipes "spoil it for the rest of us". An odd position for an
ABATE Officer to hold. But then again, this is the Peoples Republic of
Oregon and a State where ABATE and BikePAC
DOES NOT SUPPORT HELMET LAW REPEAL. Our Opponents in the
Legislature certainly don't have much to fear from Oregon Motorcycle Owners.
And my "slightly" more radical Sunday bike... a 112 CI S&S Evo with a very
hot cam and an even bigger Mikuni carb. This bike has never been
seriously in 6th gear since you're lugging the motor if you're doing less
than 80 in 5th. It sure doesn't take long to get to Daytona, Sturgis,
Chilicothe, Hollister, Laconia, Laughlin or whatever motorcycle run,
event or rodeo you happen to be going to on this motorcycle!
